Census Tips & Pointers

SOUNDEX & MIRACODE

Soundex
All cards are filed by their code under each state
Miracode
Uses soundex codes
  1.          Lists visitation number assigned by the enumerator

  2.        No page and line number on which the person appears

  3.        Gives volume number and enumeration district

  4.        Separate card for each person in the household

  5.        Covers only  the following 21 states:

  • AL, AR, CA, FL, GA, IL, KS, KY, LA, MI, MS, MO, NC, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX,  VA, WV

Coding a Surname

                  1 = b, p, f, v.

                  2 = c, s, k, g, j, q, x, z.

                  3 = d, t.

                  4 = l.

                  5 = m, n.

                  6 = r.

No code is assigned to the vowels
a, e, i, o, u,
and  y, w, h.

      Initial letter of name is not coded. If there are not three codable letters then zeros are added. Double letters count as ONE number.

                         K400 =  KELLEY

                        G663 =  GERARD

                        S365 =   STRONG

                        J523  =  JOHNSTON

                        Z232 =  ZACHOWITZ

ENUMERATION DAYS 1790 — 2000

The information is correct as of that day of the decade.
This is important to remember because a marriage may have taken place that year, but after the enumeration date. In that case, the marriage will not be recognized on the census.
Ditto for births of children, etc.
Ditto for deaths
