CHAMBERSVILLE

Weekly Democrat Gazette, March 4, 1901

ON THE WING

Arriving in Chambersville, I stopped for awhile to see how Prof. Smith handled the ferule. None of our teaches excell this modern, up-to-date pedagogue in managing school or in advancing his pupils. While I would not write disparagingly of any of our noble men and women in this high calling, yet candor compels me to say that for general deportment, discipline and mental training this school takes precedence. In the three grades the following percentages were reported: Primary, Bonnie Roberts, 97; Intermediate, Floyd Priest, 95 3/8; Advanced, Fred Close 95. One commendable feature of Prof. Smith's method of teaching the higher branches is that on Friday evening of each week an oral review is conducted alternately by the boys and girls composing the class and at the end of each month a general review (written) is conducted by the teacher. There have been 77 enrolled with an attendance of 60. He is teaching his fourth term there and will probably remain until he retires from the profession. To him and Miss Lizzie Chambers I am under lasting obligations for courtesies shown me while seeking information.

Saturday night and Sunday were spend with my old friend, T. J. Fuller, who formerly resided near Callis. He and his estimable family are well pleased with west Collin. Also dined with Mrs. Mary Orenduff near Trinity last Thursday and we enjoyed a brief rehearsal of first of last September.

D. W. Leigh.
